Fall Song

Another year gone, leaving everywhere its rich spiced residues: vines, leaves, the uneaten fruits crumbling damply in the shadows, unmattering back from the particular island of this summer, this NOW, that now is nowhere except underfoot, moldering in that black subterranean castle of unobservable mysteries - - -roots and sealed seeds and the wanderings of water. This I try to remember when time's measure painfully chafes, for instance when autumn flares out at the last, boisterous and like us longing to stay - - - how everything lives, shifting from one bright vision to another, forever in these momentary pastures. - Mary Oliver

"Lady Autumn, Queen of the Harvest, I have seen You in the setting Sun with Your long auburn tresses blowing in the cool air that surrounds You. Your crown of golden leaves is jeweled with amber, amethyst, and rubies. Your long, flowing purple robe stretches across the horizon. In Your hands You hold the ripened fruits. At Your feet the squirrels gather acorns. Black crows perch on Your outstretched arms. All around You the leaves are falling. You sit upon Your throne and watch the dying fires of the setting Sun shine forth its final colors in the sky. The purple and orange lingers and glows like burning embers. Then all colors fade into the twilight. Lady Autumn, You are here at last. We thank You for Your rewards. We have worked hard for these gifts. Lady Autumn, now grant us peace and rest." - Deirdre Akins

Bottles of Oils, Perfumes and Salts~

For thousands of years, aromatic oils, gums, and resins have been used for both medicinal and cosmetic purposes, as well as in sacred rituals. Ancient Chinese and Indian texts describe the therapeutic, philosophical, and spiritual properties of aromatics. The Bible discusses special oils for anointing and healing; aromatics were so highly prized that the Three Wise Men gave them to Jesus at his birth. The Egyptians employed scent in all areas of life, from seduction to embalming.

Scents affect the limbic system, the portion of the brain associated with memory, emotions, and sexuality, which is why certain smells reawaken memories or stimulate the libido. A whiff of a certain perfume, of sea air, of fresh-baked apple pie and, presto, a panoply of memories unfolds. Because aromas immediately trigger moods, impressions, and associations, they can be assets in spells and rituals.

How To Make Bath Salts ~

    What You Need:
  • 2 C Epsom Salts
  • 1 C Sea Salt or Rock Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Glycerine
  • Food Colors
  • Essential Oils or Perfume
  • Jars with Lids/Stoppers

  1. Mix salts together in a bowl.
  2. Stir in remaining ingredients. Generally a drop of two of fragrance is sufficient. Use ingredients containing water with care (color, certain fragrances), since too much water will dissolve salt.
  3. Spoon salts into the jars and seal them. Decorative labels listing ingredients are nice!
Tips:
  1. Make certain jars are absolutely dry. Salts absorb moisture, so this project will work better in low humidity.
  2. Kitchen fragrances work well. Try extracts of vanilla, lemon, orange, cinnamon, or mint.
  3. Not all essential oils are appropriate for bathing! Suggestions to try include lavender, rose geranium, rosemary, or jojoba.
  4. Colors or fragrances may be omitted, if desired, for persons with chemical sensitivities.
  5. Some essential oils are naturally colored (e.g., chamomile is blue).
